Street, fashion, travel, portraiture, landscape, food, still life—regardless of the type of photography you’re into, Editors’ Choice is one of the best spots on 500px to discover new photographers who are creating imagery that pushes the envelope. Each month, 500px selects two photographers from the 500px community to curate the coveted Editors’ Choice page. Which means you can count on seeing a diverse selection of photos to delight and inspire.
Each time a photo is selected for Editors’ Choice, a badge appears on the photo’s 500px page. For the photographer, this means more than just exposure, new likes, and new followers—it’s a boost of confidence for the photographer and true validation that the work they do is appreciated by photographers from all over the world.
Join me in welcoming May’s Guest Editors: Ryan Christopher Jones, from New York City, and Gary Chew, based in Singapore. Scroll down to discover their amazing photography. Then, head to Editors’ Choice and get inspired by some of the best photography on 500px.
Meet Ryan Christopher Jones
I am a Mexican-American photojournalist originally from California’s Central Valley and currently based in New York City. Originally a commercial and wedding photographer, in 2013 I transitioned into shooting more editorial once arriving in New York City. I grew up in a middle-class agricultural town that primed my curiosity in suburban America, and much of my work explores the complex foundations of the American experience while trying to balance a mixed-heritage identity. Clients include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, CNN, The Intercept and Buzzfeed.
Q: Who are your two favorite photographers and why?
A: I don’t have “favorite photographers,” but there are a number of photographers whose work I respect for many different reasons. Right now I’ve been loving Larry Sultan and Stacy Kranitz. Larry’s long project about his parents explores the ideas of intimacy and age in such a beautiful, nuanced way. Stacy’s work across the U.S. is so raw and immediate. It’s quite different from how I see and shoot, but I respect her vision and honesty so much.
Q: If you could have dinner with one person (living or deceased), who would this be and why?
I’d say my great-grandfather from Mexico. I’d love to have a conversation with him about what living in Mexico during the Revolution was like and why he moved his family to the United States.

Meet Gary Chew
I started off as a graphic designer, but it is my strong passion for photography that spurred me on to become a professional photographer. Being self-taught, I find joy in experimenting with all kinds of mediums, from film to digital to Polaroids. There are endless possibilities to explore. Photography has the capability to express ideas and capture moments of reality, and I believe that this is the best way to convey my creativity and imagination visually. Besides shooting editorials for magazines, I’m currently working on a private portrait project for the celebration of Singapore National Day as well as Malaysia National Day (I am Malaysian-born, but based in Singapore). I am also venturing into some old-school techniques of photography—tinting black and white photos.
Q: Who are your two favorite photographers and why?
A: Tim Walker. I love fashion, and I love how Tim Walker works with amazing set design and storytelling. The most amazing thing is he shoots only with natural light with film. I am a big fan of analog photography now! Paolo Roversi: the master that inspired me to use Polaroids in my projects. Super big fan of his poetic portraits.
Q: If you could have dinner with one person (living or deceased), who would this be and why?
A: That will be my grandfather. He passed away few years back. I remember clearly that my siblings and I were to go back to his hometown to visit him (he is a survivor of cancer). But a few days before the trip, he passed away. I miss him so much.
