There’s something about an aerial perspective that enchants and terrifies me at the same time. As the saying goes, “I’m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of falling,” and when those heights are hovering above an active volcano spewing molten lava that clocks in between 700 and 1200°C well… I think my fears are justified.
Fortunately, there are braver women and men than me in this world (and in the 500px community) who don’t let a little thing like falling into a liquid river of death stop them from taking a helicopter or light aircraft flight over an erupting volcano and snapping photos along the way.
The resulting shots—captured by photographers like Iurie Belegurschi, Miles Morgan, and Erez Marom (who we actually interviewed!)—may just spike your adrenaline, get your heart pumping, and give you a touch of vertigo… all at the same time. What more do you want from me!?
Don’t care for the aerial perspective? Check out this collection of 30 eye-popping eruption photos from last month. And if you have your own eruption shots you haven’t uploaded to 500px yet, get on it and post a link in the comments.
