Ask us to name a favorite book and we’ll stall or avoid answering the question altogether — how can we pick just one!? That’s why we’re celebrating National Book Lovers Day today with a look back at the stories that made up some of our favorite collections of books growing up: fairy tales. The unforgettable fantasies of the Grimms’ Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson were often much darker than we realized as children, but they served as the foundation for countless retellings and even films that grew into part of our cultural lexicon.
To commemorate these classic tales, our Content team curated a collection of otherworldly photography based on these legends generations of children grew up reciting. Most of this collection evokes visions of Grimms’ Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales, we couldn’t resist also including images that capture other childhood classics including nursery rhymes and books like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Scroll through these haunting and gorgeous photos for a journey through tales that all book lovers will remember.
