Editor’s Note: 500px NEXT is a new Special Feature we’re debuting here on 500px ISO. NEXT stands for Noteworthy, Emerging, eXpressive, and Tenacious: the four characteristics that every artist labeled a “500px NEXT” photographer has in spades.
Their work inspires, pushes boundaries, and sits at the bleeding edge of photography’s latest trends and techniques. If you think you deserve to be featured as a 500px NEXT photographer, or you know someone who does, send me an email at dl@500px.com.
The next wave in photography—emerging largely out of a generation of passionate, photo-loving millennials—has a lot to recommend it. For instance, it’s usually big on composition, highly personal, and born out of a desire to explore this beautiful world and represent it faithfully.
But the most compelling reason to love this new wave of photography can be summed up in a single word: authenticity.
And photographers like New York City-based Humza Deas exemplify this beautifully with each and every image they upload to 500px.
As with the last 500px NEXT feature we did, Humza is also unreasonably young given his talent. Just 18 years old, the Brooklyn-born photographer picked up his first camera at 17 years old and fell in love.
Transitioning from a burning passion for skateboarding into a burning passion for photography, he now spends his time scaling to the highest points of tall buildings & bridges or running through the tunnels below NYC to capture unique compositions.
But the reason his photos stand out to us is because they’re so. damn. real. They’re authentic and raw, clearly captured by someone with both a passion for and knowledge of this city, and through an eye totally immune to the same old compositions of the same old landmarks in this highly photographed city.
Whether he’s in Queens or Manhattan, on top of a building or under the city, photographing a well-loved landmark or discovering some hidden nook or cranny or abandoned building, we love the fresh perspective and killer compositions of NYC that Humza brings to 500px.
