Calling Daryna Kossar a “food photographer” falls so far short of the truth it’s laughable. The more accurate title might be “food artist”, or just plain “artist”.
Her food creations include everything from portraits and animals to landscapes and travel scenes, and each is a masterpiece of kiwi and blueberries and chocolate sauce and whipped cream and any other “materials” Daryna might be able to get her hands on.
It’s not always food—there are flower petal dresses, and a beautiful fabric portrait of Audrey Hepburn in her portfolio—but most of the time her medium is edible, and every time her creations are too pretty to eat.
Speaking to Daryna, we discovered that this wasn’t actually her initial career plan. “I was studying psychology & marketing, and liked to ‘play’ with food and take pictures,” she told us. “Then family and friends started to ask why it’s all only for me, and not for others.”
That inspired her to create some social accounts on 500px, Instagram, and other websites and start sharing her “play” with the rest of the world. Soon after, commercial offers began rolling in.
Despite her obvious talent with food, Daryna still considers herself a “jack of all trades.”
“Do not get puzzled, creative people in most cases are not so rich in Ukraine,” she said. “I had to acquire a number of skills, but since I like learning, it was a pleasure.”
Nowadays she walks around with her pencils always nearby, ready to sketch new ideas. Those are then developed over several drafts, and the final “sweet or spicy creation” is the one she liked most. “The full ‘creation’ cycle,” she explains, “may take anywhere from a day to one week (with further photo processing).”
