Thirst

An elephant herd approched the elephant hide at the Mashatu game reserve in Botswana (from where this photograph is taken). This elephant was the last to drink from the water hole and gave me ample time to take a good photograph. I was focused to get a water level shot of the elephant. The cloudy skies added some atmosphere to the scene and came to life after monochrome conversion. I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera with a Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, shot on a bean bag. No flash were used. Exposure: 1/250sec at f/4.5. Focal length 100mm. ISO 2000. It was necessary to increase the ISO a bit to accommodate the darker, cloudy surroundings. Concerning post-editing in Lightroom 5: Besides cropping and dust spotting, I decreased the highlights to add detail to the sky. The clarity was increased by 11 to show good texture of the elephant skin. Minor sharpening and masking done. I also did some local brushing on dark areas to lift the dark shadows to a normal and well observed detail.
