Red Bull Photography recently joined our community with a verified brand profile of their own. This partnership isn’t just about amazing photography — it’s also about amazing stories. Behind every shot on Red Bull Photography is a talented photographer, a wild story, and a few lessons learned. We’ll be telling those stories every week here on 500px ISO and the Red Bull Photography website.
In addition to being simply awed by the pure athletic skill displayed in sports photography, that split-second dynamic moment caught by the photographer is exactly what stuns us in photo after photo. Even more incredible is how much of the scene is caught in that nanosecond. One of our favorite examples of this? The dazzling moments when the dust, dirt, and smoke created by a skier, driver, or pilot in action nearly steal the scene from the athletes themselves. While several of the smoking effects in this collection are created using colorful smoke flares, the contrails seen in air shows and the dirt kicked up while cars and bikes go hard through their courses, reveal that you don’t even need to use the tricks of the trade for an impressive shot.
For an extra look at the story behind the photo seen at the top of this post, of world champion skier Marcel Hirscher using powder paint-filled poles to bring a color explosion to the mountains, watch the video below.
