Have you checked out the Editors’ Choice section of Discover yet? It’s not new, but it just. keeps. getting. better.
Each month a new group of pro photographers and dedicated 500px users are given the keys to the coveted “Editor’ Choice” badge and released out into the 500px universe with a single mission: show us the best photos on 500px that we wouldn’t find without you.
The results have been spectacular so far, and more often than not we find ourselves browsing the EC section instead of Popular these days!
I was doing just that this morning when I realized my jaw was open—the last week of selections (all picked by Global Photo Walk hosts, by the way) are breathtaking! Here are my 10 favorites from this past week, including light paintings, travel portraits, Photoshop manipulations, and killer dance portraits.
1. Field of Dreams by Patrick Rochon
This is what happens when you have a famous light painter as Editor… he selects amazing light paintings to feature! This photo of by Patrick Rochon shows why he’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of light painting.
2. Sunset Escape by Andrei B
One of the coolest, most minimal, subtle Photoshop manipulations we’ve ever seen on 500px. Holy crap we could stare at this shot for hours:
3. Malakai (Angel) by Derrick Senior
From the expression on the model’s face to the perfect wing shapes made by the flour pouring off of her hands and arms, this shot by Derrick Senior is studio dance photography perfection.
4. Montblanc Legend by Andrey Mikhaylov
Have you ever tried to do product photography? It’s insanely difficult and technical! Add to that needing to photograph a black item on a black background and make the image compelling at the same time, and you’ve got a nearly impossible task on your hands… well, it seems impossible anyway. Andrey clearly killed it:
5. Bubble Thrower by Lisa Graham
Underwater portraiture is incredibly difficult to get right, but this half-in half-out shot is just perfect. Enough surface to lend drama, a great scene and pose underwater, perfect exposure of the whole scene. Huzza!
6. Naga Sadhu by Dhanraj Agarwal
Incredibly simple, minimal, powerful portrait that is framed and lit perfectly. There’s really nothing more we want out of a portrait like this.
7. Photographer During Volcanic Eruption by LR Photographies
Want drama, have your subject stand in front of a friggin’ volcano that’s erupting! We’re sweating and our heart is pumping just looking at this image.
8. Rose by Jonathan-S
Macro photography of flowers doesn’t get much better than this. So perfectly minimal, so little going on and yet so much drawing your eye in: from the shape of the petals to each individual drop. Can’t say enough about this image.
9. Untitled by ? ?
Maybe we’re obsessed with simplicity and powerful storytelling this week, but both of those things are here in spades. What an emotive shot!
10. Dare to Dream by Bernard Chen
The framing, choice of black-and-white, and the adrenaline fueling adventure of the shot itself makes this a no-brainer for Editors’ Choice.
Every time I make one of these collections I spend most of the time compiling them banging my head against a wall because of the images I have to leave out. This awesome grainy portrait by Sergey Vostrikov, or this misty forest shot by Michael Bandy… how can you say no to including those!?
I’ll say this: it’s not easy.
What will make my heart rest easier though is if you go to the Editors’ Choice section of 500px right now and see them all for yourself. You’ll be wanting to bookmark that page, too… trust me.
