Last weekend half a million people came together for the Women’s March in Washington. They were joined by protesters all over the United States and around the world.

Since the moment the marches started, people have been sharing their photos all over the web—including on 500px.

The tradition of protest photography is an important part of photojournalism. As Magnum photographer, Marc Riboud said, “Photography cannot change the world but it can show the world, especially when it changes.”

Andrej Ivanov, a photojournalist from Toronto, traveled to Washington D.C. to document this historic event — that rallied people together to speak out on human rights.

“It can easily feel very claustrophobic. But it can also be empowering, to know that so many people rallied together for one greater cause: Human rights. Some people criticized it for not having, per se, a specific intent. I feel that was the beauty of it: It doesn’t matter who you are, what walk of life you come from, we were all there, in the now, rallying for something we all felt strongly about, and against someone we all felt strongly about. Whether someone was there to represent women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrant rights, or indigenous rights, the unifying term here was HUMAN rights. I went because I felt it was going to be something historic that I needed to witness for myself, that I wanted to photograph and I wanted to be a part of.”
